From sea to shining sea!

If you have read our manifesto, you'll know that we believe that stripes are timeless. But did you know that the chic and classic nautical stripe shirts or the more accurate moniker, Breton stripes, were originally a French sailor's uniform? The French always seem to get it right! Hailing from Brittany, a north-west region in France, or as the French say Bretagne, coined it the "Breton" shirt.

The March 27, 1858 Act of France declared the Breton striped shirt the new uniform for the French Navy. Like the 13 stripes on the American flag that represent the 13 original colonies (thank you 8th grade American history!), the stripes on the traditional Breton shirt have significant meaning. Traditionally, the knitted matelot had long or three-quarter length sleeves, a boat neckline, and 21 white and navy stripes — one for each of Napoleon’s victories.

Not only were these sailors looking dapper but the Breton stripe matelot even saved a few sailors from the evil clutches of siren mermaids! The distinctive stripes were easily visible over the ocean's waves if any man happened to fall overboard.

Thanks to Coco Chanel, the Breton stripes became haute couture status when she used the inspiring stripes in her 1917 nautical line, making it a timeless staple season after season.

Style icon: Françoise Hardy

Françoise Hardy, a French singer and actress, has a classic and quirky style with a Parisian flair that puts her at the top of the style icon list. She signed to a Parisian record label, Vogue, in 1961 at the age of seventeen and wowed Europe with her debut release Tous Les Garçons et Les Filles, which sold over two million copies around Europe. Mick Jagger called her the ideal woman and Bob Dylan dedicated a poem to her.
Even though Hardy was painfully shy, she had the air of je ne sais quoi about her and the camera loved her. She made street style, street style even before there was Internet, Instagram, fashion bloggers, and well... street style.

Her iconic style captured the likes of many in the fashion industry. She made lasting friendships with Paco Rabanne and Yves St Laurent and influenced Nicolas Ghesquière, former head of the couture house Balenciaga.

She mixes classic American and French pieces like trench coats and breton stripes, has sexy boho down to a science, rocks her signature locks with eye-grazing bangs beautifully, and has a simple mod aesthetic.

Hardy is definitely a timeless beauty heading into her seventies and shows no signs of slowing down. She released her latest album, L’amour fou, last year and continues to be an inspiration for women around the world.

Short and printed!

Last summer, it was all about solid colored shorts with neons and pastels. This summer, it's all about eye-catching prints like animal, polka dots, geometric, tribal, and floral. Nothing says summer like flaunting your legs to the sun!

For a relaxed and balanced look, pair your printed shorts with a neutral colored tee like black or white.

Diana Von Furestenberg is an inspiring woman with an inspiring story. She is known for her iconic wrap dress that rose to prominence in 1972. Not since Coco Chanel's LBD has a dress gotten some much attention. She re-launched her  fashion company, DVF, in 1997 with an updated version of the wrap dress. She has a commitment to female empowerment and independence and speaks out on racism in the fashion industry. She is a woman who understands being beautiful on the outside as well as the inside. Here are our 10 favorite quotes from DVF, about life, beauty, and fashion!

On self-love:
“When a woman becomes her own best friend life is easier.”

Dressing for your personality:
“Always choose styles that also accentuate your personality. Don’t use fashion to try and project a different persona.  Authenticity is key.”

Using your handbag as your guide:
“Before leaving home, check your agenda and organize your bag according to what you have to do that day. Keeping everything in order makes life easier.”

On the rules of fashion:
"If there is one rule for dressing, for fashion, it's pretty much the same rule as for everything else in life: Don't go against yourself, don't go against your own nature. It's only going to show."

On the passage of time:
“The older you get, the more you should learn to love life and appreciate the beauty that comes with age.”

About the secret of her appeal:
"I have yet to meet a woman who is not strong, and if I have any role in fashion, it is to help women express that strength."

On beauty:
"No one should notice how your eyes are done or the color of your eye-shadow. They should just notice you and notice that you're beautiful, that you have beautiful eyes."

On diet and exercise:
"Don't talk about your diet. It's just boring, and the last thing you need when dieting is to be considered boring"

On self-acceptance:
“You're always with yourself, so you might as well enjoy the company.”

From her book: Diane: A Signature Life
“The girls who were unanimously considered beautiful often rested on their beauty alone. I felt I had to do things, to be intelligent and develop a personality in order to be seen as attractive. By the time I realized maybe I wasn't plain and might even possibly be pretty, I had already trained myself to be a little more interesting and informed.”

Our very own style icon!

Today is our Mom's Birthday! She was and is our first style icon. As little girls, we use to sit on her bed, while she sat in her yellow chair in her closet, and watch her contemplate on what to wear to work in the morning. Everything we know about style, we learned it from her first. She taught us to take pride in our appearance and how to be women of style.

We called them the who questions  Other than asking us who is who, who is the oldest, or who is the bad or good triplet, the next question is always, "How did your mom raise three girls at once?" She is strong and inspiring, a woman of God, a fantastic mom, silly as a goose, a little bit of a diva, a human jukebox (she's always singing), and we love her for all these things and more!

To celebrate and honor our Mom's very special day, we're showcasing her amazing style throughout the years.

Has your Mom's style influenced you in any way? What has she taught you about style? Let us know in the comments!

Let's celebrate Christmas in July!

The summer heat has us missing the coolness of fall and winter. We also miss the feelings of giving during the holiday season, the spirit of Christmas time, and the feelings of bliss and happiness only that time of year can conjure up.

What better way to get over the winter blues than by planning a little soiree inspired by the most happiest time of the year? Christmas in July is a tradition and an unofficial holiday that many people celebrate during the summer months when they're dreaming of a white Christmas instead of a long sweaty summer. We love crazy and amusing traditions like this  any reason to celebrate right?

A classic Christmas dinner party in July sounds like a fun idea! Because with Christmas in July, you can have your ice cream and eat it too!

Have you heard of Christmas in July? Is this something you might enjoy doing?

Celebrities who blog!

We love a celebrity with style but a celebrity with her own style blog is even better! It's one thing to read the gossip magazines and watch entertainment news but to get the source straight from the horses mouth has us peeking into their lives for fashion advice, health tips, beauty regimens, and daily inspiration. Here are 5 celebrity blogs that will have you bookmarking.

Tia and Tamera are definitely best friends in our heads. We grew up watching their television show Sister, Sister and now we watch them on their reality show, Tia and Tamera, on the Style Network. They're funny, real, likable, inspiring and that translate to their blog.

Lauren Conrad rose to fame after being cast in the hit reality show, Laguna Beach; The real Orange County. Her blog is girly and cute and post about fashion, decor, health, DIYs, dining, lifestyle, and everything in between.

Olivia Palermo is an American socialite who came to prominence when she was cast in the reality show, The City, back in 2008. her street style has gotten a lot of attention and made her a style icon in her own right. With her blog, we get a personal look at her style and get great fashion advice and tips.

Coco Rocha is a Canadian fashion model with a fierce pose. She created her own fashion blog March 2011. We get a glimpse into her life and career as a model. We love that she calls herself "a Christian first and a model second."

Tracee Ellis Ross  is the daughter of the legendary Diana Ross, but  is a star in her own right. She is an American actress who made her mark on the small as well as the big screen. We loved her on her hit television series, Girlfriends. On her blog, you'll get hair inspiration, beauty tips, musings, get-fit advice, styling, good eats, and a peek into her everyday life.

What are some of your favorite celebrity blogs? Are their any celebrities you wished that had one (raises hand, Solange Knowles!)? Let us know in the comments.

Vintage style inspiration

Bright, summery, pastels, sunshine yellow, and, candy pink.

Now and Then!

Now and Then, set in Georgia during the 1970s, is a coming-of-age movie of four girls who share an eventful summer that sets in motion their adult lives. This poignant movie  showcased girlhood friendship as well as the happy go lucky fashion of the 1970s   geometric patterns, clashing colors, and the androgynous hippie look.

For these four best friends, their summer adventures were filled with being outdoors until the streetlights came on, riding their bikes to their many misdeeds, secret midnight meetings, creepy seances, playing with the neighborhood boys and swimming in the nearby lake. With these spontaneous shenanigans, they wore a lot of colors, pattern tops, denims shorts and sneakers.

We use to watch this movie all the time and watching it now brings back memories of our own childhood adventures! How about you, have you seen this movie?
