No one can rock a suit quite like Janelle Monáe! Her look and style is very intentional and demure with the classic black and white as her color palette. Monáe was discovered in Atlanta at P.Diddy's upscale soul food restaurant, Justin's, during open mic night. Big Boi from the group duo Outkast happened to be there that night and fell in love with her style and soon after, Diddy offered her a record deal.
She's definitely something new and fresh in today's sex craze music industry. Her music and style are truly one of a kind. Not only is she an amazing artist and style icon, but an inspiring young women who sets a great example to always stay true to yourself. As a critically acclaimed singer, she has "made a decision to be unique." Her unique style has captured the attention of fashion royalty like Andre Leon Tally, Hugo Boss, Ralph Lauren, and her good friend Karl Lagerfield.
We love her style of top hats, fedoras, suspenders, saddle and patent leather shoes, capes, feminine tailored suits, and silk ties and bow ties. Even her signature do, that she coined the Monae, has a classic style on its own. In her recent interview with Essence Magazine, she stated that, "showing my skin is not what makes me sexy. I like skirts and dresses like everyone else, but I had a message I needed to put out there. It was up to me to show people and young girls there was another way."
We fell even more in love with her when we heard her acceptance speech at BET's Black Girls Rock 2012 explaining why she always wore her uniform: “When I started my musical career I was a maid, I used to clean houses. My parents—my mother was a proud janitor, my step-father who raised me like his very own worked at the post office and my father was a trash man. They all wore uniforms. And that’s why I stand here today in my black and white and I wear my uniform to honor them,” She is truly inspiring!
"Whether you're high or low, you've got to stay on that tightrope and make sure you're balanced."
