Audrey Hepburn in the 1966 romantic comedy caper film, How to steal a Million, shows us that style has no age. Hepburn plays Nicole Bonnet, a daughter of a wealthy Parisian (Hugh Griffith), whose hobby is copying famous works of art. His replica of a famed Cellini sculpture is inadvertently displayed in an art museum, and he begins to worry that he'll lose his reputation and risk going to jail once the experts evaluate the statuette. Nicole decides to rob the museum, and hires a burglar (Peter O'Toole) for that purpose. But the burglar is really a detective, who has every intention of arresting Nicole and her father when the deed is done!
How to steal a Million trailer:
We love Hepburn's other classic films like Breakfast at Tiffany's with the iconic black dress, but this film takes the cake. The wardrobe in this film is beyond amazing and inspiring! All of the clothes worn by Hepburn were designed by her long time friend, Herbert de Givenchy, french designer who invented minimal fashion. We agree with Hepburn when she stated, “Givenchy dresses are so beautiful and simple, I felt wonderful in them.” Even Hepburn's hair cut made a bold statement. She debuted her new do coined the “Coupe Infante 66” by the famous Alexandre of Paris who styled and created the look for her in the film.
The first scene sets the quintessential fashion tone for the rest of the film. Hepburn's character is driving a cranberry red autobianchi Bianchina Special Cabriolet and is wearing an elegant white ensemble accessorized with round glasses (considered mod today), a quirky helmet and chic elbow length gloves. Even her sleeping attire, pretty lace and polka dots, have us dreaming sweet dreams. Everything is simple with clean lines, elegant lace, and bold colors. We see the ever popular peplum style and skinny belts; nothing feels or looks outdated. Givenchy did a wonderful job making classic and timeless pieces. That's why How to steal a Million is a great film to "steal" many fashion ideas and inspiration from!
