When life hands you gems...

We recently did a post on gold cuffs and we kept running into the same name, Coco Chanel, the Queen of style and grace. If you look at pictures of the style icon, you'll probably notice the two cuffs on her left and right wrist. This my friend is where it all started.

Coco Chanel wearing her iconic cuffs

We all know Chanel is the queen of pearls but her cuffs have a history of their own. Cuffs have been around for a few seasons now and are the ghost of fashion's past. It is said that Chanel had a few gems, given to her by ex-lovers, and wanted to update the settings. She approached her friend, Duke Fulco di Verdura, about designing her something beautiful with these gems. Chanel and Verdura set out on a European tour for inspiration and were inspired by the Byzantine artwork. What Verdura created was the iconic Maltese cross cuffs.

Chanel and Verdura

The Maltese cross is associated with the sign for Christian crusaders known as Knights of Malta. It's an eight-pointed cross; the four arms are of equal length, widening slowly to end in doubled points.

These bracelets propelled Verdura and his workshop into the spotlight. He is probably one of the most influential jewelry designers of the 20th century.

What's one thing we learned from this? When life hands you "unwanted" gems, make something grand!

A modern update of the Verdura cuffs

We hope everyone is having a great and safe Tuesday. Our thoughts and prays are with those affected by Hurricane Sandy!

  3. Wil, I am LOVING this LESSON! I adore Coco Chanel. I've always focused on her love for wearing pearls (and not always the real thing) and never paid attention that she wore cuff bracelets. Last year, I put together a post regarding her apartment in Paris. It mentioned that she received lots of gifts from her "lovers". How awesome to find out from you that she turned these gifts into wonderful jewelry pieces. I LOVE learning new things about a person! Coco was something else. Thank you for visiting my blog and please do return! I love yours! It's so refreshing and I believe in learning & growing. Your blog is unique and I LIKE that. PS - I would take more than one too! HAHAHAH I always think about that Lays potato chip commercial. Have a delightful day!
